Take Your Dog to Work Day (sometimes abbreviated as TYDTWD) was first started in 1996 in the United Kingdom and June 24, 1999^[1] in the United Stat es. Created by Pet Sitters International th is day celebrates the great companions dogs make and encourages adoptions f rom local shelters, rescue groups and humane societies.^[2] The day offers a fun, summer Friday for U.S. employees to introduce their four-legged "be st friend" to co-workers and PSI believes that dog-less co-workers will be encouraged to adopt when they witness the human-animal bond. On June 24, 1999 PSI held the first Take Your Dog to Work Day in the United States. That same year, pets.com closed its doors as a result of the dot-com crash, and PSI regained the rights to TYDT WD. In 2001 PSI was hosting the third annual TYDTWD. That year saw the intr oduction of the first TYDTWD “poster dog,” Ernie. The next year (2002) continued the “poster dog” theme with Sandy. 2003 saw t he participation of over 5000^[4] companies in TYDTWD. T hat number doubled in 2004 with an estimated 10,000^[4] internationally participating companies. The poster dog for that year was L ittle Nicky, who was the oldest TYDTWD poster dog to date. 2005 saw a recor d number of 37,191 hits on the PSI TYDTWD web site. The event was featured on such media as The David Letterman Show and the Tonight Show with Jay Len o, as well as CNN Headline News. The poster dog for that year was a pit bul l named Chloe.

Orange walks are a series of parades held annually b y members of the Orange Order during the summer in Northern Ireland, to a lesser extent in Scotland, and occasio nally in Eng land, the Republic of Ireland, and throughout the Commonwealth. These typically build up to the 12 July celebrations which mark Prince William of Orang e's victory over King James II at the Battl e of the Boyne in 1690. Although the term 'march' or 'parade' is widely used in the m edia, the Order prefers terms such as 'walk' or 'demonstration'.
The 'marching season' generally refers to the m onths April to August in Northern Ireland and includes marches by groups su ch as the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Apprentice Boys of Derry, and the Royal Black Institution as well as the Orange Order. The Orange Or der however, is by far the most prolific marching group. Typically each Ora nge Lodge will hold its own march at some point before the 12th of July, ac companied by at least one marching band. On the 12th of July each district will hold a larger parade consisting of all the lodges in that district, so metimes with the addition of lodges from outside Northern Ireland. This is particularly the case with the Belfast district, whose parade commonly feat ures several Scottish lodges and often some from other countries. In most d istricts the location of the parade will vary from year to year, rotating a round suitable towns. Belfast is an exception, keeping more or less the sam e route for many decades. General Pedro Santana had wrested the pr esidency from Buenaventura Báez, who had ban krupted the nation's treasury at great profit to himself. Faced with an eco nomic crisis as well as the possibility of renewed attack from Haiti, Santana asked Spa in to retake control of the country, after a period of only 17 years of ind ependence. Spain was wary at first, but with the U.S. occupied with its own civil war and unable to enforce the Monroe Doctrine, it felt it had an opportunity to reassert control in Latin America. Defenders Day is a legal holiday in the U.S. state of Maryland^[1] It commemorates the successful defense of the city of Baltimore on September 12, 1814 from an invading British force during the War of 1812, an event which would lead to the writing of "The Star-Spangled Banner" as the nationa l anthem of the United States.
In 1814, following the burning of Washington, a British force commanded by Major General Robert Ross landed north of B altimore and began an advance on the city. He was met almost immediately by a detachment from the Baltimore garrison led by American General John Stricker, commencing the Battle of North Point. The resulting halt of the larger Bri tish force allowed Baltimore to organize its defenses against a later attem pted naval invasion. It was during this conflict, the Battle of Baltimore, that Fort McHenry was shelled by the British but refused to surrender, and an inspired Maryland lawyer named Francis Scott K ey composed the words to what would later become "The Star-Spangled Banner", eventually proclaimed the national anth em of the United States.

The Supreme Court of the United States is the highes t court in the United States. The Battle of Vertières (in Haitian Creole Batay Vètyè), the last major bat tle of the Second War of Haitia n Independence, the final part of the Haitian Revolution under François Capois. It was foug ht between Haitian rebels and French expeditionary forces on 18 November 18 03 at Vertières. Vertières is situated in Nord, Haiti, its ge ographical coordinates are 19° 44' 0" North, 72° 13' 28". By the en d of October 1803, Haitian rebels had already taken over all the territory from France. The only places left to France were Mole St. Nicolas, held by Noailles, and Cap-Français, where, with 5000 troops, Rochambeau was at bay. With 16,000 men in four columns.
After the deportation of Toussaint Louverture in 1802, one of Toussaint's prin cipal lieutenants, Jean Jacques Des salines, continued the fight for liberty because he remembered the decl aration of Toussaint Louverture: “In overthrowin g me, you have done no more than cut down the trunk of the tree of the blac k liberty in St-Domingue it will spring back from the roots, for they are n umerous and deep.” Dessalines defeated the French army numerous t imes but the only place left was Vertières. During the night of 17&n dash;18 November 1803, the Haitians positioned their few guns to blast Fort Bréda, located on the habitation where Toussaint Louverture had wor ked as a coachman under François Capois. As the French trumpets soun ded the alarm, Clervaux, a Haitian rebel, fired the first shot. Capoix, mou nted on a great horse, led his demibrigade forward despite storms of bullet s from the forts on his left. The approach to Charrier ran up a long ravine under the guns of Vertières. French fire killed a number of soldier s in the Haitian column, but the soldiers closed ranks and clambered past t heir dead, singing. Capoix’s horse got shot, faltered and fell, tossi ng Capoix off his saddle. Capoix picked himself up, drew his sword; brandis hed it over his head and ran onward shouting: "Forward! Forward!" Rochambea u was watching from the rampart of Vertières. As Capoix charged fort h, the French drums rolled a sudden cease-fire. Suddenly, the battle stood still. A French staff officer mounted his horse and rode toward the intrepi d Capoix-la-Mort (Capoix-the Death). With a great voice he shouted: "General Rochambeau sends compliments to the general who has just covered h imself with such glory!" Then he saluted the Haitian warriors, returned to his position, and the fight resumed. General Dessalines sent his reserves u nder Gabart, the youngest of the general and Jean-Philippe Daut, Rochambeau ’s guard of grenadiers formed for a final charge. B ut Gabart, Capoix, and Clervaux, the last fighting with a French musket in hand and o ne ep aulette shot away, repulsed the desperate counterattack. A sudden d ownpour with thunder and lightning submerged the battlefield. Under cover o f the storm, Rochambeau pulled back from Vertières, knowing he was d efeated and that Saint-Domingue was lost to France. Another leader of the f ight at Vértieres was Louis Michel Pierrot, the husband of the mambo Cécile Fatiman who had led the vodou ceremoni es at Bois Caïman on 14 August 1791 together with Boukman.

Our Lady of Guadalupe (Spanish: Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe), also the Virgin of Guadalupe (Virgen de Guadalupe) is a Roman Catholic icon of the Virgin Mary. The tradition relates that on 9 December 1531 , Juan Diego, a recently converted Aztec peasant, had a vision of a young woman, a lady, while on a hill in the Tepeyac desert, near Mexico City. The lady in the vision asked him t o build a church where they stood on the hill. Juan Diego told the local Bishop, Juan de Zumárraga, of the apparition; do ubtful, he asked for proof. Juan Diego later returned to the Tepeyac desert hill; again, the lady appeared to Juan Diego, who told her of the bishop&r squo;s request for proof of her apparition. The lady then instructed Juan D iego to go to the hill top, where he found Castillian ros es – native to Durango, the bishop’s Spanish home town&nbs p;– and which did not bloom in winter. Juan Diego cut the roses, plac ed them in the a pron of his tilma cloak, and delivered them to the bishop; an imprint of the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared on the tilma, formed by the soil and the Castillian roses.

Juan Pablo Duarte y Díez (January 26, 1813 &n dash; July 15, 1876)^[1] is one of the Founding Fathers of the Dominican Republic. He was a v isionary and liberal thinker who along with Francisco del Rosario Sánchez and Matías Ramón Mella is widely considere d the architect of the Dominican Republic and its independence< /a> from Haitian rule in 1844. His aspiration was to help create a self-sufficient nati on established on the liberal ideals of a democratic government.
The highest mountain in the Caribbean is named Pico Duarte in his honor, as are Juan Pablo Duarte Square in New York City, and many other noteworthy landmarks, suggesting the historical importance that Domin icans have given to this man. His vision for the country was quickly underm ined by the conservative elites, who sought to align the new nation with colonial powers and turn back to traditional regionalism. The economy improved rapidly from 1933 to 1937, but then relapsed into a deep recession. The bi partisan Conservative Coalition t hat formed in 1937 prevented his packing the Supreme Court or passing any cons iderable legislation; it abolished many of the relief programs when unemplo yment diminished during World War II. Most of the regulations on business w ere ended about 1975–85, except for the regulation of Wall Street by the Securitie s and Exchange Commission, which still exists. National Freedom Day is a United States observance o n February 1 honoring the signing by Abraham Lincoln of a joint House and Senate resolution that later became the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. President Lincoln si gned the Amendment outlawing slavery on February 1, 1865, although it was n ot ratified by the states until later.
Major Richard Robert W right Sr., a former slave, believed that there should be a day when freedom for all Americans is celebrated. While living in Philadelphia towards the end of his life, he invited local and national leaders to mee t to organize a movement for a national holiday to commemorate Lincoln's si gning of the 13th Amendment. The resulting National Freedom Association pro posed having a memorial date to call attention to the continuing struggle f or freedom for African-Americans. Since President Lincoln had signed the 13 th Amendment on the first day of February, that date was chosen to celebrat e National Freedom Day. The Virgin of Suyapa (Spanish: Virgen de Suyapa) is an 18th-century statue (6 cm/2.3 in) of the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ . The statue, also known as Our Lady of Suyapa (Spanish: Nuestra Señora de Suyapa), is perhaps Honduras' most popular religious image, and the focus of an extensive pilgrimage. The statue is kept in the Bas&iac ute;lica de Suyapa in Suyapa, a suburb of the capital Tegucigalpa , and toured through various other parts of the country each year in early February. International Women's Day (IWD), originally c alled International Working Women’s Day, is marked on March 8 e very year.^[1] In different regions the focus of the celebrations r anges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards wo men to a celebration for women's economic, political and social achievement s. Started as a Socialist political event, the holiday blended in the cultu re of many countries, primarily Eastern Europe, Russia, and the former Soviet bloc. In many regions, the day lost its political flavou r, and became simply an occasion for men to express their love for women in a way somewhat similar to a mixture of Mother's Day and Valentin e's Day. In other regions, however, the original political and human ri ghts theme designated by the United Nations runs strong, and politica l and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner.
The first national Women's D ay was observed on 28 February 1909 in the United States following a declar ation by the Socialist Party of America.^[1] In August 1910, an International Women's Conference was organized t o precede the general meeting of the Socialist Second Interna tional in Copenhagen. Inspired in part by the American socialists, German Socialist Luise Zietz proposed the establishment of an annual 'Internation al Woman's Day' (singular) and was seconded by communist Clar a Zetkin, although no date was specified at that conference.^{[2]<
/a>} Delegates (100 women from 17 countries) agreed with the idea as a strategy to promote equal rights, including suffrage, for women.^[3] T he following year, on 18 March, 1911, IWD was marked for the first time, by over a million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. In the Austro-Hungarian Empire alone, there were 300 demonstrations.^[2] In Vienna, women paraded on the Ringstrasse and carried banners honouri ng the martyrs of the Paris Commune.^[2] Women demanded that women be given the right to vote and to hold public office. They also protested against employment sex discrimination.^[1] Americans con tinued to celebrate National Women's Day on the last Sunday in February.[2]

The Mexican oil expropriation (Spanish : expropiación petrolera ) (also petroleum expropriation, petroleum nationalization, e tc.) was the expropriation of all oil reserves, facilities, and for eign oil companies in Mexico in 1938. It took place when Presid ent and General Lázaro Cárden as declared that all mineral and oil reserves found within Mexico belon g to the nation. It is one of the Fiestas Patrias of Mexico , celebrating the date when the President, General Lázaro Cárdenas, declared that all oi l reserves found in Mexican soil belonged to the nation, following the prin ciple stated in the Article 27 of the Con stitution of 1917. A member of the Polish landed nobility, Pulaski was a mi litary commander for the Bar Confederation and fought against R ussian domination of the Po lish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. When this uprising failed, he emigr ated to North America as a soldier of fortune. During the American Revolutionary War, he saved the life of George Washington~~[4] and be came a general in the Continental Army. He died of wounds suffered in the Battle of Savannah. The Second Battle of Rivas occurred on 11 April 1856 between Costa Rican militia under General Mora and the Nicarag uan forces of William Walker. The lesse r known First Battle of Rivas took place on 29 June 185 5 between Walker's forces and the forces of the Chamorro government of Nica ragua.
At the time, a major trade route between New York City and San Francisco ran through southern Nicaragua. Ships from New York would ente r the San Juan River from the Atlantic and sail across Lake Nicaragua. People and goods would then be transp orted by stagecoach over a narrow strip of land near the city of Rivas, before reaching t he Pacific and being shipped to San Francisco. The commercial explo itation of this route had been attained from a previous Nicaraguan administ ration to Wall Street tycoon Cornelius Vanderbilt's Acces sory Transit Company. Garrison and Morgan had wrested control of the compan y from Vanderbilt and then supported Walker's expedition. Vanderbilt spread rumors that the company was issuing stock illegally in order to depress it s value, allowing him to regain controlling interest.

Elected president in what Jefferson called the Revolution of 1800, he oversaw a pea ceful transition in power, purchased the vast Louisiana Territory from France (1803), and sent the Lewis and C lark Expedition (1804–1806) to explore the new west. His second t erm was beset with troubles at home, such as the failed treason trial of hi s former Vice President Aaron Burr, and escalating trouble with Britain. With Britain at war with Napoleon, he tried aggressive economic warfare against them; however, his embargo laws did more damage to America n trade and the economy, and provoked a furious reaction in the Northeast. Jefferson has often been rated in scholarly surveys as one of the gr eatest U.S. presidents, though since the mid-twentieth century, some hi storians have increasingly criticized him for his failure to act against do mestic slavery.^[1]^[2]

The United States occupation of Veracruz, which bega n with the Battle of Veracruz, lasted for six months and was a respo nse to the Tampico Affair of April 9, 1914. The incident came in the midst of poor diplomatic re lations between Mexico and the United States, related to the ongoing Mexican Revolution.
After the Tampico Affair, where nine Americ an sailors were arrested by the Mexican government for entering off-limit a reas in Tampico, Tamaulipas,^[2]President Woodrow Wilson ordered the Unite d States Navy to prepare for the occupation of the port of Ve racruz. While waiting for authorization of Congress to carry out such action, Wilson was alerted of a delivery of weapons fo r Victoriano Huerta due to arrive to the port on April 21 on th e German-registered cargo-steamer SS Ypiranga. As a result, Wils on issued an immediate order to seize the port's customs office and confiscate the weaponry. Huerta had taken power with the assistance of the American ambass ador Henry Lane Wilson during a coup d'état in early 1913 known as La decena trágica. The Wilson administration's answer to thi s was to declare Huerta a usurper of the legitimate government, embargo arms shipme nts to Huerta, and support the Constitutional Army of Venustiano Carranza.

King Woodbridge, president of Dictap hone Corporation. They served on a council addressing a national shortage o f skilled office workers. Together with Harry Klemfuss, public relations ac count executive at Young & Rubicam, they originated the idea for a Nati onal Secretaries Week.

The Declaration of Independence was a statement adop ted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, which announced that the thirteen American colonies, then at war with Great Britain, regarded themselves a s independent states, and no longer a part of the British Empire. John Adam s put forth a resolution earlier in the year which made a formal declar ation inevitable. A committee was assembled to draft the formal declaration, to be ready when congress voted on independence. Miguel Gregorio Antonio Ignacio Hidalgo-Costilla y Galla ga Mandarte Villaseñor^[3] (8 May 1753 – 30 July 1811), more commonly known as Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla or simply Miguel Hidalgo, was a Mexican priest and a leader of the Mexican War of Independence.
In 1810 Hida lgo led a group of peasants in a revolt against the dominant Peninsulars un der the banner of the Virgin of Guadalupe. After clashe s with the Creole people and other townspeople, the group disbanded.^[4] Hidalgo was captured on 21 March 1811, and executed on 30 July. Hidalgo's rebellion was the beginning of wh at would become the Mexican War of Independence. Although he was unsuccessf ul in his original aim, Hidalgo's efforts were followed by those of José María Morelos and Agustín de Iturbide who brought down the coloni al government of Spain in Mexico. Hidalgo is considered the Father of the Nation of Mexico.^[1]

The Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence is alleg edly the first declaration of independence made in the Thirteen Colonies during the American R evolution. It was supposedly signed on May 20, 1775, at Charlotte, North Carolina, by a committee of citizens of Mecklenburg County, who declared i ndependence from Great Britain after hearing of t he battle of Lexington. If the st ory is true, the Mecklenburg Declaration preceded the United States Declaration of Independenc e by more than a year. The authenticity of the Mecklenburg Declaration has been disputed since it was first published in 1819, forty-four years af ter it was reputedly written. There is no conclusive evidence to confirm th e original document's existence, and no reference to it has been found in e xtant newspapers from 1775.
Many professional historians have maintai ned that the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence is an inaccurate rende ring of an authentic document known as the Mecklenburg Resolv es. The Mecklenburg Resolves were a set of radical resolutions passed o n May 31, 1775, that fell short of an actual declaration of independence. A lthough published in newspapers in 1775, the text of the Mecklenburg Resolv es was lost after the American Revolution and not rediscovered until 1838. Historians believe that the Mecklenburg Declaration was written in 1800 in an attempt to recreate the Mecklenburg Resolves from memory. Corpus Christi (Latin for Body of Christ) is a Latin Rite solemnity, now d esignated the solemnity of The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpu s Christi).^[1] It is also celebrated in some Anglican, Lutheran< /a> and Old Catholic Churches. Like Trinity Sunday an d the Solemnity of Christ the King, it does not commemorate a particular event in Jesus' life. Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed annually on the la st Monday of May (May 28 in 2012).^[1] Formerly known as Decoration Day, it orig inated after the American Civil War to commemorate the fallen Union soldiers of the Civil War. (Southern ladies organizations and southe rn schoolchildren had decorated Confederate graves in Richmond and other ci ties during the Civil War, but each region had its own date. Most dates wer e in May.) By the 20th century Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died in all wars. Memorial Day is a day of remembering t he men and women who died while serving in the Un ited States Armed Forces.^[2] As a marker it typically marks the start of the summe r vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end.
By the early 20th centu ry, Memorial Day was an occasion for more general expressions of memory, as people visited the graves of their deceased relatives, whether they had se rved in the military or not. Jefferson Finis "Jeff" Davis (June 3, 1808 – D ecember 6, 1889) was an American statesman and leader of the Confederacy during the American Civil W ar, serving as President of the Confederate States of America for its e ntire history. Davis was born in Kentucky to Samuel and Jane (Cook) Davis. After attending Transylvania University, Davis grad uated from West Point and fought in the Mexican–American War as a colonel of a volunteer regiment. He served as the United States Secretary of War under Democrati c President Franklin Pierce. Both before and after his time in the Pierce administration, he served as a Democratic U.S. Senator representing the State of Missis sippi. As a senator, he argued against secession, but did agree that each state was sovereign and had an unq uestionable right to secede from the Union.^{[2]}
On February 9, 1861, after Dav is resigned from the United States Senate, he was selected to be the provis ional President of the Confederate States of America; he was elected withou t opposition to a six-year term that November. During his presidency, Davis took charge of the Confederate war plans but was unable to find a strategy to stop the larger, more powerful and better organized Union. His diplomatic efforts failed to gain recognition from an y foreign country, and he paid little attention to the collapsing Confedera te economy, printing more and more paper money to cover the war's expenses. Historians have criticized Davis for being a much less effective war leade r than his Union counterpart Abraham Lincoln, which they attribute to Davis being overbearing, controlling, and overly meddlesome, as well as being out of touch with public opinion, and lacking support from a politica l party (since the Confederacy had no political parties).^[3] His preoccupation with detail, reluctance to delegate responsibility, lack of popular appeal, feu ds with powerful state governors, inability to get along with people who di sagreed with him, neglect of civil matters in favor of military ones— all these shortcomings worked against him.^[4]

Kamehameha Day on June 11 is a public holiday of the state of Hawaii in the United States. It honors Kamehameha the Great, t he monarch who first established the unified Kingdom of Hawaiʻi — comprising the Hawaiian Islands of Niʻihau, Kauaʻi, O&# 699;ahu, Molokaʻi, LānaE 9;i, Kahoʻolawe, Maui and Hawaiʻi. While he was king, Hawaii was a center of the fur and sandalwood trade. Pineapples were brought to Hawaii from Spain in 181 3 and coffee was first planted in 1818, a year before he died. In 1883 a st atue of King Kamehameha I was dedicated in Honolulu by King David Kalā kaua (this was duplicate, because the original statue was lost at sea). There is another duplicate of this statue in Emancipation Hall at the Capitol Visitor Center in Washington, D.C.
The holiday was first established by royal decree of the ruling great grandson Kamehameha V on 1871.^[1] The first obser vance of the holiday happened the following year. Late 19th century celebra tions of Kamehameha Day featured carnivals and fairs, foot races, horse rac es and velocipede races. Kamehameha Day was one of the first holidays proclai med by the Governor of Hawaiʻi< /a> and the Hawaiʻi State Legislature when Hawaiʻi achie ved statehood in 1959.
